This booklet is based on observations from almost three decades of systematic exploration of the therapeutic potential of non-ordinary states of consciousness induced by psychedelic substances and various non-pharmacological techniques. The first approximately twenty years involved clinical work with psychedelics and the last ten years experimentation with various powerful non-drug alternatives. This booklet deals with so called transpersonal realm of the human consciousness and suggests that modern consciousness research and psychology should free itself from the conceptual strait-jacket of mechanistic science which has been a serious impediment in the past and persue with confidence the logic of its own findings. It has become quite conceivable that its finding will represent an independent and significant contribution to the emerging paradigm and a new scientific world-view of the future.

Stanislav Grof, M.D., Ph.D., is a psychiatrist and therapist with an extensive background in consciousness research. He is the author of 'Realms of the Human Unconscious', 'The Human Encounter with Death', 'LSD Psychotherapy', 'Beyond Death', 'Beyond the Brain' and numerous scientific and clinical papers. Active in international programs, Stanislav Grof also conducts workshops and training seminars at Esalen Institute in California. He is the president of the German Transpersonal Assoziation.
